Six resignations
Three unfilled positions from the Spring election
Two graduations
Two moved up to executive positions
One transfer
And one leave of absence
Overall there are 13 open positions in Student Senate after two new senators were approved at this week’s meeting.
Student Senate is supposed to have 30 senators (10 on-campus, 10 at-large, and 10 off-campus) work with the executive board to approve funds, address needs of the students and generally represent the student population. But at this point they are under par (not a good thing in this case) and can’t effectively perform their duties.
Rather than pointing fingers about why this happened or whose fault it is, perhaps the best solution is to constructively build up those positions by seeking out potential senators.
“I feel like we have a really, really strong core in student government starting out,” said Tiffany Turner, Speaker of the Senate at the Student Senate meeting.
And while this may or may not be true, Student Senate will be more efficient at serving the student body if all of their seats are filled and functioning.
And so here’s my plug: applications for Student Senate are available in the Student Activities Office on the second floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
They are due one week from now, Friday, September 11 and will be followed up by interviews with Turner.
If you don’t like how something is being done, here’s your chance, pick up an application and be the change you want to see on campus.
Because if you don’t, I for one don’t want to hear you complain later.
