Fashion tips: Men’s hair
Hello everyone. My name’s Kristy. I’m here to talk about fashion.
Disclaimer: I am not an expert. I simply have an avid interest.
Today, let’s discuss hair. Let’s narrow that to hair on men.
Tradition says men do not have much to work with. They are to keep it short, simple and clean. This has not always been the case, though.
Men have endured trends just as women have in regards to their hair. The 1970’s had everyone trying to do a ‘fro. The 1980’s was a mix of new wave hair, a la Flock of Seagulls, and mullets. Grunge ushered in long and unkempt hair. Some things should just remain in the past.
As a man grows older, his hair inevitably changes in one of two ways. He will either go gray along with his women counterparts. He also has the option, depending on genes, to begin balding and possibly losing his hair. At the on sight of losing hair, many men comb hair from one side to the other, as to lessen the appearance of balding. This is called a comb over. This is also not all that attractive. However, it accompanies coping with the shock of growing older. Therefore, I respect it a little more.
Men have several options that I am willing to respect. A shaggy haircut will look good on just the right guy. As long as a guy’s hair does not fall past his shoulders, I do not mind it being long. This of course, must be the right guy as well. I’m getting used to the bald style. I’m not completely sold on it, but it usually does not look terrible. I like hair gelled up properly. It is a controlled, yet messy look. Short is always safe, but too short can be a problem. I do not respect guys who use more hair care products than I do. Nor do I respect a guy putting his hair into a pony tail.
I’ve seen far too much of one trend. This is the faux-hawk. It is where guys use the hair they have (basically short hair) and attempt to mold it into a Mohawk. Yet it’s not a real one. Hair still exists on both sides of the head where it should not be. Plus, the hair really is not long enough to be considered a ‘hawk. The true spirit of the hairdo says it must be the only hair one has, and it must reach extreme heights.
To me, this look says one thing. I do not have enough balls to actually have a ‘hawk, so I’m just going to do this. I’m not much a fan of the ‘hawks. I do, however, respect them. That is the difference. The person with a ‘hawk was ballsy enough to carry it through. He or she was not worried enough to keep up with the latest trend. He or she wanted something different.
For me, the faux-hawk lacks class. What is trying to be proven? Is it that you could have a ‘hawk if you had balls? Is it that you’ve figured out how to use gel and now you’re just experimenting? Either way, go all the way with it or do not try. A faux-hawk is half the way. I’d like to see any of those lame guys sporting it to actually go out and get a ‘hawk.
Next week, I’ll delve into women’s hair.
