11/1: Pet blog: Expect dogs to eat weird things, like golf balls

I’ve heard my fair share of funny dog stories, but never have I heard of a puppy swallowing eight golf balls.
That’s right. Eight golf balls.
The rottweiler’s owners, from Boxboro, Mass., who have only had the puppy for less than eight months, said that they regularly have friends come over and play golf in their backyard. Their puppy has been fetching in random golf balls that appear in the yard, but apparently ingesting them too.
After hearing this story, it got me to thinking of my own puppy, back home (well, he’s not a puppy anymore.)
Not only has he ingested multiple tablets of iModium, but he’s eaten money, has eaten fluff from stuffed animals, and so many other things it’s hard to keep track.
I think if you’re going to have a puppy, this is something you’re going to have to expect. It’s very hard to completely “dog proof” a house. If they eat something weird, don’t totally freak out — but bring them to the vet right away to have your pooch checked out.
Just as long as you keep an eye on your dog, and tend to them when they’re feeling sick, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. And of course, if your dog winds up eating something as crazy as golf balls — try to make sure to keep it out of sight so the dog won’t get at it again. The first time it’s okay, but if your dog eats golf balls multiple amounts of time, not such a good idea.
But most importantly: love your dog. If you do that, you are definitely headed in the right track.
